Dating Secular Evolution: Bar Ages from Stellar Kinematics

چکیده

The last few years witnessed a change of perspective in the context of galaxy formation and evolution. The major role played by bars in the history of these fundamental building blocks of our universe was finally realized. However, and despite the fact that one of the major concerns of any physical science is to measure timescales for natural phenomena, we have as yet no established way to estimate the ages of these important galactic components. In this contribution we outline the method we developed to estimate bar ages and briefly describe its first results. 1 Why do we need bar ages? It is now generally accepted that bars make substantial changes to the destiny of most disk galaxies [7]. The development of a method that enables us to measure for how long a bar is present in its host galaxy is thus of primary relevance. Fundamental questions can be better addressed or even answered with such a method at hand, including: To what extent bars are relevant to the building of bulges and its variations [1]? How exactly the processes induced by bars contribute to the stellar and non-stellar nuclear activities in disk galaxies [6]? When did the first bars appear [3]? Are bars a recurrent phenomenon [2]? Or are they a robust, perennial galactic structure [9]?

Correlations between Kinematics and Metallicity in the Galactic Bulge: A Review

Recent large-scale surveys of galactic bulge stars allowed to build a detailed map of the bulge kinematics. The bulge exhibits cylindrical rotation consistent with a disky origin which evolved through bar-driven secular evolution. However, correlations betweenmetallicity and kinematics complicate this picture. In particular ametal-poor component with distinct kinematic signatures has been detec...

Bulges or Bars from Secular Evolution?

We use high resolution collisionless N -body simulations to study the secular evolution of disk galaxies and in particular the final properties of disks that suffer a bar and perhaps a bar-buckling instability. Although we find that bars are not destroyed by the buckling instability, when we decompose the radial density profiles of the secularly-evolved disks into inner Sérsic and outer exponen...

Study of the stellar line-strength indices and kinematics along bars⋆ I. Bar age and metallicity gradients

Aims. This is the first paper of a series aimed to understand the formation and evolution of bars in early-type spirals and their influence in the evolution of the galaxy. Methods. Optical long-slit spectra along the major axis of the bar of a sample of 20 galaxies are analyzed. velocity and velocity dispersion profiles along the bar are presented. Line-strength indices in the bar region are al...

Star Formation Properties in Barred Galaxies(SFB). III. Statistical Study of Bar-driven Secular Evolution using a sample of nearby barred spirals

Stellar bars are important internal drivers of secular evolution in disk galaxies. Using a sample of nearby spiral galaxies with weak and strong bars, we explore the relationships between the star formation feature and stellar bars in galaxies. We find that galaxies with weak bars tend to be coincide with low concentrical star formation activity, while those with strong bars show a large scatte...

Bar-driven Evolution and 2d Spectroscopy of Bulges

A multi-faceted approach is described to constrain the importance of bar-driven evolution in disk galaxies, with a special emphasis on bulge formation. N-body simulations of bars are compared to the stellar kinematics and near-infrared morphology of 30 edge-on spirals, most with a boxy bulge. The N-body simulations allow to construct stellar kinematic bar diagnostics for edge-on systems and to ...
